Something about Finland

As You might realise, I am a finnish citizen. This means that I have pretty good observing conditions in winters due the Suns position in the finnish sky. The downside for this "winter darkness" is the midnight sun in summers when there are not any stars in visible. Well this means that I and my finnish "colleagues" must do as much observing in winter time as possible. More about Finland you can find from the official Finland -site.

Astronomy in Finland

Finland is one of the biggest countries in "amateur astronoming" in whole World if You look the amount off people who are members of the national astronomy association Ursa. There are no any bigger professional observatories in Finland. Biggest are Tuorla Observatory and Metsähovi Radio Observatory.

However there is quite active "amateur observatory" -net in Finland. The biggest observatories in this net at the moment are Hankasalmi Observatory, Nyrölä Observatory, Tähtikallio, Jakokoski Observatory, Sahaneva Observatory and Taurus Hill Observatory. All these observatories are also members of the Finnish Observatory Network.

Astronomical Research in Taurus Hill Observatory

Taurus Hill Observatory is one of the most active amateur observatories in Finland. There has been made a research about asteroids, exoplanets and supernovae. The first supernovae found by a Finn in Finland, was made in Taurus Hill Observatory. I personally have very close contact to this site, due I was few years head of the observing group.
